Endocrinology - Program Info

The Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes Fellowship Program at Einstein Healthcare Network is a two-year, ACGME accredited, clinically oriented program accepting two fellows per year.  Our goal is to provide excellent training in the science and practice of endocrinology through mentored relationships, lectures, conferences, and direct patient exposure.  We plan for our fellows to achieve progressive independence towards becoming competent clinicians, caring practitioners, effective teachers, and life-long students of endocrinology.

The Division of Endocrinology currently has six full-time faculty members. It is part of an academic center with over 400 residents in 30 accredited programs. The program provides an outstanding setting in which to learn. Einstein Healthcare Network has extremely busy inpatient and outpatient services, including thriving programs in liver and kidney transplantation and cardiothoracic surgery. Our department also services patients at Willowcrest Skilled Nursing Facility, Elkins Park Hospital, and Moss Rehabilitation. The skilled nursing facility provides an unusual continuity of patient care outside of the acute inpatient setting. Elkins Park Hospital is a community hospital with a Center of Excellence for bariatric surgery. Moss Rehabilitation provides a unique view of endocrine issues of post-surgical and brain injury patients, like hypopituitarism after brain trauma or diabetes management in chronic alternative feeding methods.

Fellows see outpatients in clinic 2 - 4 half days per week. They are responsible for the inpatient consult service at the two primary facilities on a rotation basis. Second year fellows have electives in reproductive endocrinology, pediatric endocrinology, and options to rotate in the a variety of specialty clinics like bariatrics, lipid clinic, osteoporosis clinic as well as with radiology in nuclear medicine and bone densitometry. They will also have dedicated time to participate in a research project. There will be opportunities to practice thyroid ultrasounds. Current fellows are performing 15-20 fine needle thyroid aspirations during training. In addition to regular teaching rounds and case conferences, fellows participate in monthly pathology conference, journal club, and research conference. Fellow participation in external conferences is encouraged, for example those sponsored by the Endocrine Fellows Foundation and national meetings like ENDO and AACE.
