  • In June 1999 Einstein Heart Institute opened in the newly constructed Minerva and Fred Braemer Heart Center - the initial Center included a state-of-the-art digital catheterization laboratory and outpatient cardiac center. The Heart Center has evolved over the past years to include 4 operation cardiac catheterization laboratories, two of them with cardiothoracic/interventional cardiology "hybrid" labs. The labs are equipped with cutting-edge technology to reduce radiation exposure and improve image acquisition. Each room has built-in IVUS and physiology coronary assessment software.
  • The Heart Center includes 2 fully-equipped EP labs, both with biplane capacity and advanced EP technology.
  • The Heart service also includes a 16-bed coronary care unit (CCU) and an 8-bed CICU used for post-PCI patients.
  • On the ground floor of the Braemer Heart Center, the Cardiology Department runs a cutting-edge imaging service that includes transesophageal echocardiography, SPECT nuclear technology, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI.
  • The Heart service is supported 24 hours/7 days a week by a robust CT surgical department that not only performs bread-and-butter bypass surgery, but also runs a busy Valvular Heart Disease Program and LVAD Program.
  • The program has a diverse patient population with multiple pathologies which include both acute and chronic heart disease. The patient volume far exceeds the number of interventions required for each interventional cardiology resident during their one year of training. There is a nice mix of cases which present acutely to the Medical Center with patients referred from tertiary centers. The IC Fellowship Program provides training in peripheral intervention with a health relationship with Vascular Surgery. Fellows are also exposed to advanced structural and valvular procedures including interatrial septal closure for PFO/ASD, valvuloplasty, TAVR and MitraClip.
  • The quality of the faculty is excellent. Each of the three key faculty members has extensive experience in interventional techniques as well as research in cardiovascular disease. The other professional faculty members are also excellent and contribute significantly to the education of the interventional cardiology residents.
  • The interventional laboratory has a long tradition of clinical research. The key faculty members participate in independent projects as well as multi-center clinical interventional trials.
  • The interventional laboratory has a computerized database for tracking the results and complications of interventional procedures. The system is set up to compare the results to those of the national standards set up by the American College of Cardiology. The interventional laboratory has a dedicated quality improvement nurse to assist the interventional cardiology residents in learning the details of the quality improvement process.
  • The interventional faculty is fully experienced in the use of new interventional technology. These devices include Doppler wire, intravascular ultrasound, rotational atherectomy and stent placement.
  • The Interventional Program has graduated several excellent interventionalists. The alumni have been extremely successful in their careers in intervention.
