Class of 2025
Areeba, M.D. (she/her)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Karachi, Pakistan
Medical School: The Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan
Career Interest(s): Developmental Behavioral peds, Adolescent Medicine, but open to anything I fall in love with in the next three years.
Hobbies: Petting and playing with my cat, Bella, and anyone and everyone’s pets. Also I love swimming, Zumba, and Netflix.
Fun Fact(s): Breakfast is my absolute favorite thing in the world.
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: THE PEOPLE! From the zoom socials to the interview day, they could not have been any kinder to a secretly very nervous interviewee. The zoom socials are at 5 AM in the Pakistani time zone, where I was calling from. But the enthusiasm, warmth, and candidness of the conversations woke me up, and that was also the first time I got the gut feeling that I would be truly very happy here, among these co-residents - and this feeling was only reinforced during the interview. Also, the fact that there is so much real work that can be actively done for the underprivileged.
Christina Augustin, M.D. (she/her)
Place of Birth/Hometown: I was born in New York but moved to Florida when I was a baby. My Hometown is Weston, FL.
Medical School: Howard University College of Medicine
Career Interest(s): Currently, I’m interested in community pediatrics in an outpatient setting or possibly school-based health centers. I also have interest in adolescent medicine. I know that I want to be able to engage underserved communities and provide care that treats illness as well as social determinants of health.
Hobbies: I love to practice yoga, watch movies (our household is a big A24 supporter), explore new restaurants and listen to live music (especially house music so I can dance all night long!). I also love fashion and jewelry and love to make my own jewelry using crystals.
Fun Fact(s): I am obsessed with crocs and I’m a budding croc collector! I’ve once even waited in line for 3 hours for an exclusive pair of crocs. So you’ll definitely seeing me wearing crocs in the hospital all the time!
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: Einstein was actually the first interview I had in the cycle, and I knew right away that it would be a good fit for me. We talked about all the ways that Einstein residents get to be a part of the community, and I thought the centering parenting group was a really cool opportunity. We even talked about possible grants I could apply for to do my own community engagement project, which was really unique. Attendings and residents spoke of the great relationships they had with each other, and it really felt like a place I would feel comfortable learning and growing in. Philly is also a great city, and I was excited to live in a place where I could serve a diverse patient population and be able to do the things I love when I was off work.
Ramya Balasubramanian, M.D. (she/her)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Born in the town of Tiruvannamalai and brought up in Mumbai, India

Fun Fact(s): I have a superpower of sleeping literally anywhere and everywhere. I have slept multiple times whilst standing in Mumbai local trains without falling lol. Also, I have an Instagram page where I occasionally post music covers and teach singing to children on the weekends!
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: Even before my interview, I got really good vibes from Einstein Peds’ social media pages and website. The people, the faculty, the curriculum and great fellowship placements, all drew me to Einstein. I somehow felt that I belonged here! On the day of the interview and zoom social, I was only reassured about my decision. I couldn’t be more excited on match day when I found out that my feelings were reciprocated!

Medical School: American University of Antigua
Career Interest(s): Gen Peds, NICU, Hospital Medicine
Hobbies: gardening, cooking, traveling
Fun Fact(s): I can drive a skidder.
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I know at Einstein I will get a strong background in primary care; this field is built on education, advocacy, and awareness Thus working with a very diverse community will allow me to advocate for the most vulnerable in our society. I am certain that I will learn the requisite skills, knowledge, and experience needed to become an excellent pediatrician.
Stephanie Espejo, M.D. (she/her)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Born in NYC, raised in Yonkers, NY
Medical School: Caribbean Medical University School of Medicine
Career Interest(s): NICU or Child Abuse
Hobbies: Traveling will be my forever favorite hobby, but I also enjoy singing, dancing, spending time with my family, playing with my dog and watching Horror movies!
Fun Fact(s): I have traveled to over 15 countries! My father has always been an avid traveler and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I am a daddy’s girl after all.
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I can honestly say that following my interview with Einstein, I could barely sleep from excitement. I was very impressed by the program’s core values and commitment to effect change within their institution and community. While conversing with current and past residents, I could immediately sense the pride each member felt for Einstein and I eagerly wanted to be a part of it. I knew then what I know now and that is that Einstein is the place for me!
Nicholas Genovese, D.O. (he/him)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Garden City, NY
Medical School: West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
Career Interest(s): Primary Care, LGBTQ+ patient- and family-centered care, and allergy are at the top of my list currently, but it's always changing.
Hobbies: Spending time with family and friends, going to the beach, trying new foods, boating, exploring national parks, assembling model car kits, anything Italian, being a tourist, and just being outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air!
Fun Fact(s): If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be a haunted house critic.
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I was excited about the strong academic environment, mixed with a tight knit and supportive community, and the location! Ultimately, I wanted to train in an urban setting with a diverse patient population, but I also wanted a "small town" feel like what I had in West Virginia during medical school. Though my interview was virtual the program felt like one big family with trainees and faculty who supported each other, and valued the learners – Einstein Pediatrics fit the bill perfectly! At the end of my interview, I felt instantly connected with the faculty and residents, recognizing a similar passion for both pediatric primary care and underserved populations. Finally, the place: Philadelphia! The variety of food is unbelievable, the Delaware River waterfront is gorgeous, and living so close (compared to West Virginia) to my family back on Long Island is just amazing.
Charlotte Jo-Ching Hsiung, M.D. (she/her)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Taipei, Taiwan
Medical School: National Taiwan University
Career Interest(s): Cardiology
Hobbies: I like to play the violin. I have been recently into hiking and free diving as well.
Fun Fact(s): My mom named me Charlotte because she likes the Charlotte in Charlotte’s web.
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I read the article of PBS about the refugee clinic every week in Einstein. This echoed with why I chose medicine as a career when I was a student. I was moved by the work done in Syria by Doctors without Borders. By being a resident here, I want to become a competent pediatrician that can help kids live up to their potentials.
Mark Kiley, D.O. (he/him)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Evergreen Park, IL
Medical School: Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine
Career Interest(s): Critical Care or Infectious Disease
Hobbies: Running, reading historical biographies (I have a life goal of reading one for each U.S. president), writing short stories, listening to baseball.
Fun Fact(s): I have almost 100 first cousins. The two genres of music I most jam to are very different styles: Pop Punk and Broadway Musicals. I listen to as many Chicago Cubs Baseball games on the radio as I can (I usually end up listening to over 100 in a season!)
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: By far the biggest reason was the residents I met during the interview process. I felt seen as an individual and valued as a future clinician and potential colleague. It seemed like I would fit right in. Beyond that I was looking for a smaller program so that I could build close connections with my co-residents, and I wanted one with an emphasis on community outreach.
Diyva Seth, M.D. (they/them)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Summit, NJ
Medical School: Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine - Harlem
Career Interest(s): Unsure, but potentially Adolescent Medicine
Hobbies: Fixing up found furniture, getting tattoos, reading too many books, trying not to kill my indoor plants, watching horror movies, and taking care of animals (my boyfriend and I have a spotted leopard gecko, a ball python, and two cats).
Fun Fact(s): I try a Reese’s cup once every year just to see if I’m still allergic to peanuts (I don’t advise anyone to do this).
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I loved that the program strongly encouraged diversity and a culture of resident wellbeing when I interviewed! I knew I needed a close-knit, accepting, and progressive environment to thrive as an openly transgender resident and a proponent of social justice. I was very relieved to find a program where I could be myself.
Asra Wahid, M.D. (she/her)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Karachi, Pakistan
Medical School: The Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan
Career Interest(s): Cardiology or Critical Care
Hobbies: swimming, running, and watercolor painting
Fun Fact(s): I love traveling and trying new cuisines
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: Einstein Pediatrics gave me a very friendly atmosphere during interview season. It had the perfect combination of tertiary care inpatient at St. Chris and outpatient at Einstein. I wanted to live in a big city like Philadelphia and enjoy the city life, as well as be close to my partner at Penn!
Class of 2024
Sofía Chang Escobar, M.D. (she/her)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Guatemala
Medical School: Universidad Francisco Marroquin
Medical Interest(s): Gastroenterology, Primary Care
Hobbies: Reading, charcoal drawing, watching true crime documentaries
Fun Fact(s): Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and it gets me really excited. I could eat breakfast all day. I love the traditional Guatemalan breakfast food: Scrambled eggs, black beans, fried plantains and queso fresco. When I moved to Philadelphia, my family brought a suitcase with black beans from Guatemala that will last until next time I go back. Don’t tell customs.
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I was attracted by the curriculum, especially the Centering program, and the diverse population this programs serves. Since the interviews were done virtually, I was not able to physically visit the campus. However, I did find Einstein Pediatrics’ Instagram account and realized the faculty and residents were from around the world, and the graduating residents matched into amazing fellowship programs. When I got interviewed, this was the one I enjoyed the most. The faculty were focusing on me as a person and tried to get to know me rather than asking me about my accomplishments. During the zoom socials, I realized the residents had meaningful relationships and were genuinely happy. I felt like I knew them since forever; it was as if I had found my people. Now months into my intern year, even though some days are hard and busy, it’s comforting having Einstein as family.
S. Rosalee Hardy, M.D. (she/her)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Staten Island, NY
Medical School: American University of the Caribbean
Medical Interest(s): General Pediatrics, Pediatric Neurology
Hobbies: OrangeTheory Fitness, swimming, dancing, writing documentaries
Fun Fact(s): I have traveled most of the United States; would like to visit more countries other than my family’s countries of Trinidad & Tobago and Puerto Rico
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I chose Einstein because the program captured my heart. Everything from how the curriculum is structured, to how involved faculty and co-residents are with creating a healthy learning environment--serves a meaningful purpose. Residency is an imperative time when new physicians learn how, and what it means to provide efficient patient care. At Einstein Pediatrics, I know that I will be prepared to make a difference in my community and for the remainder of my career.

Place of Birth/Hometown: Montreal
Medical School: Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion Israel Institute of Technology
Medical Interest(s): Pediatrics, Technology/Innovation, Global Health

Fun Fact(s): One thing I could not live without is sleep. (I recommend reading “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker for anyone, especially physicians).

Medical Interest(s): General Pediatrics, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease
Hobbies: Traveling, leisure reading, spending time with loved ones
Fun Fact(s): I haven’t ever lived in a cold climate so let’s see how these Northeast winters go!
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I was very impressed with the questions being asked of me during the interview process. The faculty wanted to know what I thought about systemic inequality and socioeconomic burdens individuals faced and what we as healthcare workers could do about it. This showed me how important and pertinent social context was to this institution. I wanted to train in a place that values the fact that while the person visiting us may be a patient, they have a life story that should be addressed. The pediatrics residency program at Einstein provides me with the humanity in medicine I was looking for.
Ahmed Naffi, M.D. (he/him)

Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: It offers a thorough and well-rounded education with diverse experiences in a nurturing, supportive, and inclusive environment, that I feel is unmatched anywhere. Beyond this, the culture and family of diverse, loving individuals upon whom the program is built was something special that I greatly desired to be a part of!
Khang Nguyen, M.D. (he/him)

Medical Interest(s): Infectious Diseases, Neonatology
Hobbies: Re-watching Modern Family and The Office over and over again, running, cooking and baking
Fun Fact(s): I once wrote a whole novel but it never got published (lol).
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I was super impressed with how friendly and supportive everyone was at the program. During interviews, I was able to have open honest conversations about myself and what I would want to do in the future, and the faculty were very understanding. I felt like they saw me not as an applicant with this test score or that achievement, but as a human with both strengths and flaws. So as much as I chose Einstein, I was super thrilled to find out that they chose me too.
Leilani Segura, M.D. (she/her)
Place of Birth/Hometown: New York, NY
Medical School: Universidad Iberoamericana – UNIBE, Dominican Republic
Medical Interest(s): Neonatal-Perinatal, Hematology-Oncology
Hobbies: I’m a complete foodie!! The first thing I do whenever I'm in a new city is look up restaurants that I can go to - this also leads me to being frequent at the gym!
Fun Fact(s): I’ve been the same height since I was ten years old! (I’m 5’9).
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: I have this “thing” about gut feelings, (maybe it's because I’m a cancer) and I think that’s what happened with Einstein. I knew what I was looking for in terms of academics, which is easily found online through a simple Google search BUT I wanted a program that sort of felt like home. I wanted a program that was diverse, with a strong emphasis on patient care, and doctors that treated their residents with respect. My interview could not have gone any better, if I’m being completely honest. The doctors that interviewed me were kind, witty, completely aware of today's racial health disparities — and motivated to try and change that… and that just sealed the deal.
I also wanted a program that was semi close to home, since I had been away for so long, and Philly is a great city with so much to do!
Daniel Serje, M.D. (he/him)
Place of Birth/Hometown: Long Island, NY
Medical School: American University of the Caribbean
Medical Interest(s): Emergency Medicine
Hobbies: I enjoy all sports (ball is life), watching stand-up, trying every pizza spot Dave Portnoy has been to in Philly (Pizzeria Beddia is the hype!), re-watching Borat clips.
Fun Fact(s): I’m a big space nerd and like to read up on astrophysics and anything Neil deGrasse Tyson related.
Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: It hit all the check marks- it kept me not too far from family/friends back in NY, has a strong free-standing children’s hospital partnership in St. Chris, secures excellent fellowship matches each year, but overall it’s the people. Einstein was my first interview back in early November, and it set the bar high when going through the interview trail. The authenticity I felt at the interview and social, made me feel like this was a place that I could grow to become confident in my clinical practice, all while being in a collegial environment among awesome people.

Why I chose Einstein Pediatrics’ Residency Program: the people and the opportunity that comes with this program. i loved everyone on my interview day! and after researching the opportunities not only during residency but after for fellowship, i knew i would be happy here! the location was also important to me, i wanted to be in a city and i definitely got that! i’m also not too far from my family and friends in ohio, so i get the best of both worlds.
