Emergency Medicine

Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, now part of Jefferson Health, maintains two distinct Emergency Departments caring for communities in North Philadelphia and Elkins Park.

The main Emergency Department in North Philadelphia is a robust academic emergency setting with a Level One Trauma Center, an active interventional cardiology program, a Primary Stroke-Thrombectomy Capable Center and 57 individual treatment stations. The Emergency Department at Elkins Park is a full-service, community-focused emergency setting with 11 individual treatment rooms.

Our emergency nurses practice in fast-paced clinical settings, where they must remain flexible and focused on delivering the highest quality care to our most acutely ill or critically injured patients. They regularly provide care for all ages, from newborns to elderly patients, and they are integral to coordinating patient care within the treatment teams.

In this academic emergency setting, nursing and ancillary support staff are the foundation of a patient-centered care team. Each core care team is made up of a professional nurse, an emergency department technician, a resident emergency medicine physician and an emergency medicine attending physician. The team is supplemented by an embedded respiratory therapist, a clinical pharmacist, an RN case manager, social workers, and a robust opioid use disorder team, which includes a behavioral health consultant (social worker) and two opioid peer specialists. Two nursing educators also support our Emergency Department.
