Nursing in Philadelphia
Surgical Nursing at the Einstein Surgical Center

Operating room nurses function as a circulators and scrub nurses. They are very resourceful and travel within the urban core, working in a variety of specialties including orthopedic surgery, GI, cataract surgery and pain management.
The ECS conducts weekly educational/informational in-services with physicians on new equipment and technology and provides continuous learning opportunities in HealthStream modules and annual hands-on GI competencies. Many nurses from the OR and pre/post op sub-units are active members of the surgical cluster group, which keeps everyone up to date on best practices.
Being affiliated with an academic teaching hospital, provides nurses in the ECS with opportunities to work on new and innovative medicine with an urban level 1 hospital. Because the ECS is a smaller-scale, free-standing surgery center, everyone must work collaboratively for the benefit and optimal quality care of patients.
Patient satisfaction scores at the ECS are in the 90th percentile overall, which is high in comparison to the national benchmark. As surgical volumes at the center continues to grow, patients frequently return to the center, noting the optimal continuity of care ECS provides. Patients enjoy getting their outpatient procedure without the complexities of a larger facility, regularly comment on center nurses' compassion and high-level knowledge, and nurses at the ECS frequently receive awards recognizing care excellence.
