Frequently Asked Questions
A gynecologist is a physician who specializes in female reproductive health. A gynecologist may help women with a range of issues ranging from sexual health and fertility and by diagnosing and treating conditions such as endometriosis, breast cancer, and cancers of the reproductive tract.
During your gynecologist appointment, your doctor will talk to you about your concerns and perform a general physical exam to check for any general health problems. Your gynecologist may also perform an external genital exam and a pelvic exam to assess the health of your internal organs. A gynecologist may also perform a Papanicolaou test (also known as a Pap smear) to check for signs of cervical cancer, as well as a breast exam.
A Papanicolaou test, commonly known as a Pap smear, is a procedure used as a test for cervical cancer. A Pap smear involves collecting cells from the cervix (the lower narrow end of the uterus at the top of the vagina) using a small cone-shaped brush and a tiny plastic spatula. Doctors recommend that women ages 21 to 65 years get a Pap smear every three years. Pap testing can be performed every five years if combined with testing for human papillomavirus (HPV). Doctors may recommend more frequent Pap smears for women who present with certain risk factors.
An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that can form in an ovary or on its surface. Many women have ovarian cysts at one time or another during their lifetime. Many women have ovarian cysts at one time or another. They present with little to no discomfort and are harmless. If an ovarian cyst ruptures, it can cause significant pain, infection, and internal bleeding. If a cyst grows large enough, it can result in the twisting of the ovaries and decrease blood flow.
